King Vulture Portrait...... by jdmphotography
The King Vulture Portrait…... Please view this bird larger he is stunning ! ... (-: The King Vulture, is a large Central and South American bird in the New World vulture family Cathartidae. This vulture lives predominantly in tropical lowland forests stretching from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. The adult King Vulture is the most strikingly colored of the New World Vultures. King Vultures have lived up to 30 years in captivity, though their lifespan in the wild is unknown. This vulture uses urohydrosis, defecating on its legs, in order to lower its body temperature. Despite its bill and large size, it is relatively unaggressive at a kill and will normally back down rather than fight. The King Vulture lacks a voice box, though it can make low croaking noises and wheezing sounds. Its only natural predators are snakes, which will prey upon the vulture’s eggs and young, and large cats such as jaguars, which may surprise and kill an adult vulture at a carcass. The King Vulture feeds solely on carrion and, unlike some New World Vultures, is not known to kill sick or dying animals for food.It often eats stranded fish along river banks, but does not come to village refuse dumps for food.Though it has keen eyesight which can help it locate food. There is evidence that suggests a decline in population, though it is not significant enough to cause it to be listed. This decline is due primarily to habitat destruction and poaching.

About This Group
Our Avatar Competition Winner and Featured Artist for the month of August is Tony (Wayofthewarrior) Congratulations to Tony for winning the August Avatar. As our featured artist, I asked Tony to tell us a little about himself. He graciously agreed to share a little bit of his story with our group. Thank you, Tony for the contribution of your talents to the group. We continuously enjoy your postings. Please be sure to stop by Tony’s gallery to see the rest of his unique works of art, and leave a message congratulating him on his win!
First I would like to say thank you for the honor of being chosen as this months group avitar. My name is Tony and I live in Fort Worth, Texas. I have several hobbies along with photography, cycling and going to the gym are also an important part of my life.
If I had to give advice to anyone new it would be first, learn your equipment, try new things and settings and study light. Second, do not be afraid to experiment with new styles or techniques, I learned by reading as much as I could about photography and applying the things I read about. My inspiration for photography is photography itself, the ability to create and capture images from the simple things in life to the complex. It allows us to see the world and moments in time that are frozen forever.
My image was a part of a series I did called Jungle Mist. I wanted to create images that took the viewer into the world of the subject. My goal was when you looked at the image I wanted you to see the Primate for the wonderful creatures that they are, to see and feel some kind of emotion along with the visual. in a way I feel sometimes I am speaking for them through my art.
My favorite animal to photograph when I visit any Zoo are big cats, I will spend hours watching them, they command such respect my goal is to capture their inner spirit and show them for the majestic creations that they are.
Once again I am honored at being chosen and humbled as the site has some of the best artist and people one could hope to meet.
Thank you all,
Tony
