Flight Before the Wild Horses' Charge by Kira Hagen
This photo shows a large herd of wild horses on the Danube Delta, in Romania, charging directly at me. Well, there was no where to run so I kept shooting and they turned before trampling us. I didn’t notice that they’d scared up a pheasant while charging until I saw the photos afterwards! This herd is descended from a domestic herd which was let loose from a failed farm about 9 years ago, our guide told us. There are about 130 or so horses in it now. The field they’re in used to be a lake until the local government gave permission for it to be turned into a fish farm to a local businessman; instead of cultivating anything, he drained it, collected and sold the fish left flopping, and then left. Now it’s just pastureland. Between feral animals like the horses and land management practices like that, the Danube delta is a seriously endangered environment.

Polar Bear Family II by Steve Bulford
WILD & FREE / / Polar Bear mum and cubs resting on an ice floe. / A bit cold on your bum if you ask me!! / / The sea ice is shrinking at an alarming rate, which has a huge impact for the bears as this is their main hunting ground. More and more bears are being found to have drowned while trying to find the ice, even though they can swim up to sixty miles or so! / / I hope the ice does not completely vanish and that they always have somewhere to hut! (Spitzbergen – Scandinavian Arctic) / /

This Thick-tailed gecko Underwoodisaurus milii was found during hand searches in spinifex in western NSW. We enjoyed his company during this early morning photo shoot. NAMIB DUNES WITH ORYX by Michael Sheridan
My choice for Africa’s handsomest antelope, the Oryx (Gemsbok in Afrikaans) is one of the few large mammals that can tolerate the Namib Desert’s extreme conditions. It’s face looks like a delicate watercolor. The dunes at Sossusvlei are part of the Namib-Naukluft National Park – the largest park in Namibia and, in fact, the largest park in Africa.

The Alpha Enters by Jay Ryser
Not the greatest image quality in the world, but it does illustrate the power of the alpha male. These are 2 male foxes. Pock (as the locals call him) is the alpha male. Although there’s not much size difference between them (in fact, I think the other male is just a tad bigger), Pock commands respect and the other male clears out when challenged by Pock. It’s fascinating to watch their interaction and the politics involved in this little fox community. Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) / Wheatridge, CO / Sony Alpha700 / Sigma 300/2.8 / Giottos tripod, Acratech ballhead, Wimberley Sidekick ISO200 f/4 1/250sec

Our Valley (HDR) by Fremme
Took this yesterday during our walk around Alta Lake here in Whistler, a great beautiful day where the weather was great and the sun was high and strong. Always find that snow is hard to capture without having overexposures or loosing colors of the surrounding tree so I decided to try something. Basically shot this image in HDR, bracketed 3 images from -1.66. 0 +1.66 and this was the result. / This image was taken off the frozen lake facing north, in the distance you see a mountain which is called Armchair, behind the clouds is Wedge and to the left is Mtn Currie which is over 30km away. Season Greeting to all, Merry Christmas and all my best wishes during the Holiday period. Take Care Image taken with my Canon Xt, Tamron 28 to 105 SP lens, / HDR composed of 3 images / Better viewed full screen

Marmots by Manuel Wieczorek
Marmots This is a marmot family. In the background you can see the Pasterze Glacier. The Pasterze is the longest glacier in Austria and is situated underneth the Großglockner, the highest mountain in Austria (3798m). And everything in the amazing national park Hohe Tauern. / I made a walk up there in the summer 2008. Not to the peak ;-). In the valley is a wonderful path where you get to the glacier. / I was shocked when I arrieved there. The last time I visited it in 1995 and it lost a massive amount of ground. All because of the greenhouse effect. And it becomes faster and faster (there are signs where you can see the condition from 1985 up to now).
