Crossing the Water by Dikkidee
The Photo: This is an old Kodachrome Slide projected on to a flat white screen using a slide projector and taking a Digital photograph of it. The slide was taken around 1971 so it is nearly 40 years old. i have not done any retouching to this image as I think it pervades “Atmosphere” as it is. The Subject: An 0-6-0 Saddle Tank locomotive and train, I do not know the exact identity of the engine other than it is a J94 type austerity. The photo wasa taken at the Midland Railway Preservation Society Butterley UK.

I'll take the high road... by newbeltane
Taken a long time ago (we’re talking so long I can’t quite remember!) on a trip to Scotland. It was by train so before I drove… must be around 30 years ago. Taken on my old Paulette Electric II film camera. The trains in those days had windows in the compartments (yes, they still had compartments… told you it was a long time ago) so as I was awake with the dawn I stood on a seat, stuck my head out of the window and took just one shot… this is it! I guessed the exposure as the metering was somewhat primitive.. can’t remember what it was now. I only took one for several reasons… it was film and in those days you took fewer shots to make them count and I nearly hit my head on a passing pylon! I was also afraid the guard or conductor would see me and get angry with me… they could be pretty fearsome! Scanned today into Photoshop and then applied a Nik Color Efex ro 2.0 Skylight Filter (as I didn’t have one on the lens if I recollect).

Barreling By by ej29
Saturday as I was crossing the track on my way home I looked to my left and saw the lights in the distant. I found a place to turn around and to park. I grabbed my camera and jumped out of the car. I ran to the track to see how close it was or if it had stopped. I was so excited I forgot to check th settings on the camera. As I stood on the track, I took the first two shots, then I realized it was coming fast. I stepped to the side about 4 ft. when I took the next shot. I was still too close so I moved about 4 more ft. and took the last shot as it barreled by me at about 60 to 70 mph. The last shot is the one you see. I know it sounds crazy but I finally got that shot. And yes the camera was on all the wrong setting, its not perfect but I think it still turned out pretty cool. Oh, if you look at it big you can see the driver and it looks like a women. Thank you for looking and I hope you like it…

Warped Speed by Paul Lavallee
Long exposure of a train entering Union Station in Providence, RI 2008. Captured with a Diana+ with a 35mm back and cross processed Kodak Elite Chrome 100 film. No photoshop manipulation, but the negative was woefully under-exposed, so the scanner had its work cut out to bring the darkened photo to life. (c) Paul Lavallee 2008 /
