  • Forever Young by Heather Hartkamp

I wanted this to be a ‘social commentary’ on lots of things – old age, the passing of time, the contrast between youth and old age, fitness versus loss of physical condition, the fact that even old men can still appreciate a lovely young woman! That is why I decided to process with an ‘illustration’ look to it. As a straight photo it was simply a funny, candid snap. Processed this way it has much more ‘punch’ as a ‘storytelling’ image. • London Tourists by david malcolmson

This image was nominated for the Pay Forward group by SeanOlio (http://www.redbubble.com/people/seanolio). He wrote: / “I would like to nominate David Malcolmson’s photo London Tourists / This is an extraordinary image in its own right, and has a justified place in the history of that great art form – street photography. On the one hand, it seems hard to believe that the image is approximately 41 years old, but on the other hand it is hard to escape the conclusion that it is very much a product of its time. It seems to me that works like this just aren’t being casually made anymore, so we should celebrate fine examples like this one and use them as inspiration so that we can re-ignite the flame that once powered our candid street photographers.” ** Possibly the strangest photograph I have ever taken. It was late afteroon and I was approaching the entrance to Piccadilly Station when I saw these people gazing at the local sights. I was extremely lucky to have just one frame of film left. The light was getting dim so I shot at full aperture and prayed everything would turn out all right.. Thankfully it did! London, 1967.

  • Arlington West 2007, Santa Barbara, California by Eyal Nahmias

Arlington West is an ongoing display of the casualties in Iraq on East Beach in Santa Barbara, to protest against the war in Iraq, and increase the public awareness regarding the military and political fallout of staying there. Each Sunday morning thousands of crosses, as the number of the fallen, for that day, are placed in the sand and volunteers are providing the public with up to the moment information on casualties plus individual stories on the fallen. This image was taken at memorial day 2007 as a tribute and memorial and as a cry for peace…Eyal Nahmias

  • Grief by Kevin Downey

I happened past a church one day, and had a camera handy, a small inconspicuous one. I hadn’t known a funeral had just taken place, until I saw the tell-tale black and somber limos waiting outside, and so joyless they were. I would never have dreamed of abusing such a moment by photographing it, but I was compelled to do so for one reason only – the elderly man in the foreground could pass as my late father’s identical twin. At first I thought the scene had induced a type of psychosis, or hallucination, so striking, so perfect was the resemblance. And, I remembered my own father when my mother passed away, shortly after their fiftieth anniversary. She had become his entire world. He had taken to calling her “mother” rather than “Dot” a few years earlier, I think as an affectionate way of conveying his respect, the mother of his children. He had that same look at the funeral. Partially disbelief, but only partially, as the grief shone through above all else. He was never the same after mom died. He began to go through the motions of living, but with no real conviction, no authenticity.
