This is for Mike, one of the weather guys on the Cocos Islands. Everyday we would ask him what the forecast was, and everyday he would reply “Mostly fine, chance of a shower”! I guess this was the “chance of a shower” bit! Mike is a great guy with lots of wonderful stories from his time spent living all around Australia.

During my travels in six states in the past week, I finally landed in Durbin West Virginia, where I stayed with a friend of mine. This old coal steam engine depot is in her little historical town of Durbin. We finally got a chance to ride this train that soon will be reaching it’s centinial (100th) birthday in 2010. This engine is called The Durbin Rocket One of three coal steam engines actually running in the world. When we came to a short stop, I took advantage of shooting this (and yes, have quite a few shots while riding it) Something about the elderly gentleman looking at this engine remembering when he was a boy and rode trains like this enticed me to shoot it in black and white. This has not be converted, I changed settings on camera to shoot in BW, I will be adding more photos of my travels after I return from Texas this weekend. This was shot in SS priority, F-stop of 8.0, Exposure at 1/125, ISO of 400, Exposure Compensation at 0 / Best if viewed larger.

Taken on Scenic Drive. Carmel, California. November, 2007. There’s an interesting story behind this photograph, and #244, “Scenic & 8th. I was in a local camera store in Carmel, the manager of the store was telling me my camera was a toy because it wasn’t a high priced SLR, like he seels in the store. Obviously this annoyed me because i knew what my camera was capable of doing. So I left the store, walked down toward the beach, saw these Cypress trees, and took these shots in about five minutes. / I then walked back up to the camera store, and showed them to the manager, and the staff. They were impressed with the quality of the images. / I love my camera! I’m using the Panasonic Lumix FZ-50 That is what I used to take almost all the photographs in my portfolio. I’m satisfied with the performance of that camera. The images speak for themselves.

© 2008 Sharon Anne Mau Featured in the ImageWriting group 24 December 2008 Cacatua moluccensis / Vulnerable / IUCN Red List of Endangered Species After slight adjustments in Curves, I desaturated the green and yellow colours, effectively converting this colour photograph to a Selective Colour, highlighting the beautiful plumage of this lovely bird. This image was taken in Lahaina on Maui 02 May 2008 72.0 dpi / Av( Aperture Value ) 5.6 / Metering Mode Evaluative Metering / White balance compensation B1 M1 / Lens EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM / ISO Speed 200 The Moluccan Cockatoo, Cacatua moluccensis, also known as Salmon-crested Cockatoo, is a cockatoo endemic to south Moluccas in eastern Indonesia. At 50 cm, it is the largest of the white cockatoos. The female is larger than the males on average. It has white-pink feathers with a definite peachy glow, a slight yellow on the underwing and underside of the tail feathers and a large retractable recumbent crest which it raises when threatened, revealing hitherto concealed bright red-orange plumes to frighten potential attackers (may also be raised in excitement, or other ‘emotional’ displays). It also has one of the louder calls in the parrot world and in captivity is a capable mimic. In the wild the Moluccan Cockatoo inhabits lowland forests below 1000m. The diet consists mainly of seeds, nuts and fruit, as well as coconuts The Moluccan Cockatoo can no longer be imported into the United States because it is listed on the Wild Bird Conservation Act. However, they are being bred in captivity. Potential owners should be fully aware of the husbandry requirements of the species. The Moluccan Cockatoo is widely considered to be the most demanding parrot to keep as a pet. A typical Moluccan Cockatoo needs around eight hours of daily attention from its caregiver to keep it happy. As with most large cockatoos, the Moluccan Cockatoo develops health and behavioral problems such as feather-plucking and aggression if not provided with the appropriate environment, attention, and enrichment opportunities. / Information Source: Wikipedia

Key West Lighthouse LARGE view – Please! In 1825, the first lighthouse was constructed in Key West at Whitehead Point. The tower stood 65 feet tall and was destroyed by a hurricane in 1846. Fourteen of the people, that had entered the lighthouse to ride-out the storm, lost their lives. In 1826 a new lighthouse had been completed on higher ground standing 66 feet tall. This brick structure was reworked in 1894 to add 20 feet to it’s height. Now standing 86 feet tall, it produced an un-obstructed red & white constant beacon with a lens focal plane of 96 feet. This lighthouse and keeper’s quarters can be visited and toured year-round. The island of Key West offers much to do and see. The entire length of Duval Street is full of shops, restaurants and clubs! Also complete with an aquarium, museum and much more to see at the North end. Near the lighthouse is Ernest Hemingway’s house, which I love! A majority of the island attractions are within walking distance. Mopeds – which can be rented by the day or week are the common mode of transportation around the island. Otherwise – you simply walk! / _______ / All The Materials Contained May Not Be Reproduced, Copied, Edited, Published, Transmitted Or Uploaded In Any Way Without My Permission.
