  • Vintage effect - simplified

Here’s the basis for my Vintage effect rose just posted … I …

Here’s the basis for my Vintage effect rose just posted … I did go on and add a few frills (see my paragraph at the end) but the whole outcome hangs on this simple process: While this is aimed at PS / CS2 / CS3 users I’m confident you’ll find this doable in Elements also. 1. Make a DUPLICATE LAYER of your image (control J) / 2. In the Image menu, go to Adjustments and across and down to Gradient Map / 3. This should show you pretty little boxes of colour! Click on the one which has darker grey in top LH corner, decreasing to white in lower RH corner. Click OK / 4. Across to the top right of your Layers Pallette, click on the tiny arrow next to Opacity. / 5. Move the slider till the image suits you … maybe halfway? / 6. Go to Image menu / 7. Down to Adjustments and across to Photo Filter. / 8. Choose the Sepia filter, and adjust the sepia density. Click OK. / 9. Back to Image menu / 10. Down to Adjustments and across and down to Brightness/contrast / 11. Fiddle the sliders a tiny bit to get the contrasty look that you’d like. Click OK This is basically it – you’ll need to flatten the image before saving. However there are many more variations you can use once you are comfortable with this process. Try adding a different filter other than Sepia, or some tasteful light with the Render filter. Try doing another duplicate layer with Gaussian blur and erasing the blur at maybe 50% from the main focus of the shot (as I did with my rose) … then of course flatten again before you save. Please point me to your image if you use this – I’ll be interested to see how you go!!!

Firstly I was wondering why my Vintage Pink image was taking off suddenly today with more comments and favouritings – now I know!! It is featured on Redbubble’s Art page – along with amazing images by Jason Connelly, Paul Vanzella, Robert Mullner, Sharon Hammond and others whose bootlaces I feel unworthy to tie! I am thrilled. Secondly I had word today that Vintage Luna Park will be used by a card company in Sydney to create giveaway postcards in spinners at hundreds of venues – I don’t think it has sunk in yet – Sarah’s Butterfly Kisses was published by them a few weeks ago, and is already out there in the ‘marketplace’ so keep an eye out in tourist spots, cafes, theatres etc … you may see some familiar images!!! Woohoo !!!

I had to read the notification twice before I could believe it – last night a LARGE mounted print of Real Men Drive Utes sold – obviously to a Ford lover!! (Is it significant that I also sold a copy of the old Ford Anglia recently?!!) There have been a few featureds and ‘top 10’ images lately, but this sale has eclipsed those … THANK YOU to the anonymous buyer. It certainly cheered up my day.

I am proud to unveil the latest painting from my studio, titled “Segawa Kikunjojo II & Ishiyama no aki no tsuki”. / (Dancing The Part Of Yamauba & The Autumn Moon Above Ishi Mountain) My painting is styled after ancient (1760 era) Japanese Graphic art, by artists like Tori Kiyomitsu Ga and Eshi Tori Kiyomasu Hitsu and based on paintings like, The Autumn Moon Above Ishi Mountain and Segawa Kikunojo II, Dancing the Part of Yamuba. / This is the first in my study paintings of ancient Japanese artwork. It was a very intense and rewarding piece to work on. Every line and brush stroke needed to be calculated and yet also flow with an ease and grace. This is the first study painting in a series of many I intend to delve into over the next year. / I am very drawn to Japanese art and grew up with traditional Japanese artwork in my home. The beauty of this type of art has always captured me, as I hope my work will for you as well. Here are some photos of my art as it is being created and completed…enjoy! xoxo

/ My Father had a great love for his cats. I remember once when I was designing a window treatment as a house warming gift for my folks, he and my step-mom carefully thought over and chose the very same blue that was the exact shade as their cat’s eyes. All of his life he had this special bond with his cats and all animals. I guess the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.. A special dedication to Leena and Minny on Friday, 12/12/2008 / Welcome home Minny!

Good things actually come in threes, not in twos!! A huge THANK YOU to Blossom who purchased a card of Faded Rose tonight. All three images that have drawn attention today have been in the Vintage genre – maybe someone is trying to tell me something?!! Rather than leave a comment here, please use those moments to have a look at Blossom’s beautiful gallery – she supports cancer research with some of her sales and deserves encouragement for her efforts. :)

My strongest Fashion influences have been from film… Bold women, bold fashion statements. Katherine Hepburn and the strong women of the 1940’s. / Suits to die for! Even their Make up compacts were works of art. Grace Kelly and Sophia Loren in the 1950’s. / Wasp waists and killer calves! Jane Fonda and the Extra’s in any Elvis film in the 1960’s. / When bathing suits were woven and often had pom poms! Big sunnies, wild colours – CO ORDINATION to the extreme – some women dressed to match their car! Heaven to me. 1970’s flared suit pants, smooth hair and wild prints and the colour CAMEL! Rock on. / Women’s suits cut so high and tight they are responsible for the varicose veins you see today. Brilliant lapels and lime green patent shoes and bags! Most funky. My translation… Primarily it is about the silhouette we cut, be it a waist accentuated or the flare of a skirt or sleeve, it must flatter and enhance a womens shape. Head turning gorgeous Fashion is what I aim to create. Lisa / x

I am honored to have my newest design The Journey and the Battle featured on the Home Page today. It’s a piece I am very excited about or rather that I’m passionate about. There is a battle for all of us and this design is a reminder to me to keep going, keep fighting and keep standing up for what is right. Also in this work the knight may be surrounded by fire but he is not harmed by it. Sometimes things seam more overwhelming than they really are at first glance but it is never worth giving up the fight for what is right…Truth, Justice and Freedom. Thanks RedBubble and to all of my friends and fans!

The Nostalgic Art & Photography Group was in need of someone to take up the reigns, so Peter (el presidente of the good ship RedBubble), the lovely Taschja Hattingh from South Africa, and I have joined forces to co-host it. We are in the process of reviewing current work, putting some processes in place to ensure smooth running of admin issues, and will then be off and running with a fresh gallery of wonderful images featuring oft forgotten times, places, objects … To those on my watchlist, it should come as no surprise that all things nostalgic, vintage, and aged is right up my alley! Feel free to browse, join, make suggestions … would love to see you there!!!

  • How long should the tube of darkness be?
    by Faith Hunter

A friend recently gave me this to help with my ttv experiments. Pretty cool huh? Some girls want diamonds but me you can make happy with a piece of PVC pipe. I especially like the black rubber that fits nicely around the lens of my Canon 300D. The point of the “tube of darkness” is to block out light between the lens of the operational camera and the viewfinder of the viewing camera. This piece of pipe works a treat. But it does need some refinement. I’m taken with Karri’s idea of an old sock. But what I do need to know is, what is the optimum length for the tube? Mine is obviously too long. I say obviously because I end up with tiny files once I’ve cropped down to the viewfinder itself in the final photo. I say obviously because it looks like this: But before I hack into it with a saw what have people found to be the optimum length for them? How do I make sure it will work well on all settings on both cameras, the Argus 75 and the Kodak Duaflex IV, and even my old box brownie? Or am I making this too complicated?
