This ground squirel has its cheeks full and is quite chubby. It will curl up in a ball in an underground burrow during the winter and hibernate. The picture was taken at Seven Falls Canyon in Colorado Springs, Co.

This door detail was photographed in Avanos, a small town in the Cappadocia region of central Turkey. The bright colors and old wood of houses and doors in these small towns are often beautiful and always intriguing. The splintered wood, tooled brass lock and handle, and encroaching shadow give this piece a sense of mystery for me.

Well, dear watchers, I’m totally freaked out about my trip to Melbourne. I’m packed and packing it…..so I thought I’d upload one last image before I leave. Garry, Nick and I left Brisbane at 1.30am to drive up to Rainbow beach last Saturday morning, and we arrived with an hour to go before sunrise. What better to do than set up the tripod and attempt to focus the camera in the dark….my first attempt at this sort of thing. Camera settings: 5:21am – Mid Winter – Canon 5D w 16-35mm at 16mm, f/4.5, 234seconds, ISO 200, tripod, cable release….of course you need a cable release to use the Bulb setting… I had four camera batteries fail that morning, so only 2 out of 6 attempts at long exposures worked. It was FREEEEEEEZING out there on the dune, but worth it for the knowledge gained. There were no clouds to speak of, so Nick wasn’t as well pleased as he would normally be :) Here’s a shot of Nick’s, to show the sheer scale of this place. Garry is circled, he’s up the slope that’s centre of my image…. / Thank you all so much for your wonderful comments and support, and I hope to meet some of you at the gallery on Friday night! Cool picture. Literally … Winter 2007 / 2008: China had its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad has seen its first snow in all recorded history. North America had the most snowcover in 50 years, with places like Wisconsin the highest since record-keeping began. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile — the list goes on and on.
