  • Dialog in the Kitchen
    by TeriLee

“Your like a pro or somethin’ Huh?” / “Yeah, something like that.”

(my practice with writing dialogs) / I was in the kitchen with a friend, and this was the dialog…we walked out of the kitchen to the blank stares of several other people wondering what the hell was going on in there…we didn’t tell them either…I’m sure those of you who know me best, can figure this one out :)

  • Kitchen Satori
    by JL Marshal

My usual reflection / in glass. Frosted!

This was a split second awakening for me. Habits breed so easily in daily life, we look out the back and see the same tree for thirty years and then one day its not there. But its a bit eerie, like we aren’t there either. It seems our identity is a co-creation with the environment much of the time, a web of mutual expectations. One chilly morning I had a very brief lapse into egolessness when I found that familiar reflection in the kitchen window to be absent. Like I’d been dragging my feet across the existential carpet and zap!.... the old static shock of revelation.

I submitted this story to a peer for review awhile back and got the saddest response from them. “This is more appropriate as a children’s book than an adult short story.” This was not written for children, but through a child’s eyes. I hope that none of us ever forget what it was like to be eye level with the kitchen counter and to be brilliant and devious, repentant and loved by somebody bigger than us who could envelop us in one hug.
