In the early 1870’s rich gold discoveries rapidly turned Hill End from a small rural and mining community into one of the largest inland towns in New South Wales. The Photos – One of the businessmen attracted by Hill End’s boom was a photographer by the name of Beaufoy Merlin. He photographed the whole town, scene by scene and building by building. The lucky discovery of this – one of the world’s greatest collections of historic photos – in the 1950’s means that we can see for ourselves, the drama that was once Hill End.
