SHIT HAPPENS

This article is about a conceptual art project, I would like to do as a three dimensional exhibit at a museum. My concept for this project was inspired by Yoko Ono, the wife of the late John Lennon. I saw a interview, where she was discussing her exhibit of conceptual art, were she arranged a room to look like a apartment, with all the furniture and the appliances, were painted white, and cut in half. She had a working telephone as part of the exhibit, she would call it randomly, and speak to who ever would pick up the phone when it rang.
My motivation behind this article, and project, is to voice my discontent, and dumb founded toward those people in the art scene who promote artist who’s work is so poor, that the only place their work should be put on display, is on their own refrigerator door, These same promoters turn a blind eye to some really talented artist, who work is of high skill and standard.
If these artist don’t find away to promote themselves, out side the mainstream art scene, the world will miss out on the great art they have to offer.

Description of exhibit

The room will be open toward the viewer, it will have 3 walls=2 sides walls, one back wall.
The walls will be painted smoky gray in color.

The floor will be tiled in black and white checker pattern.

There will be a chair behind a table, six of these sets about 2 feet apart from each other, they will be line in a row, across the room. They will all be facing in the same direction, facing toward the viewer.
The furniture will be white plastic patio furniture.

Each table will have a plate on it, the plates will have a floral pattern.
On the side of each plate, there will be a knife and a fork.

On each plate there will be a large cow pie ( cow shit – use replica )
each will painted with a different design that will represent a style of art.

There will be a large clear glass that is placed in the upper right hand corner of each table. Each glass will be holding art supplies in it.
glass 1= pencils, glass 2 = crayons, glass 3 = pastels, glass 4 = color markers,
glass 5 = paint brushes, glass 6 = air bush

Mounted on the upper back wall, there will be a three dimensional lettering,
constructed out of white transparent plastic, that will be lighted, that will spell
SHIT HAPPENS.

    Mathew,

I am glad you get a kick out of this project of my, this project has been stored in my mind for a couple of years, But I wanted to be sure that my project would not jeopardize my ministry , so i prayed God would give me wisdom as i wrote this article. If I didn’t do this project it would haunt me forever.

Sometimes things just have to be confronted head on Stephen. I dont really understand the imagery of your scene ( perhaps I am just tired!) but I do understand the sentiment of what you are saying. God bless you, dear brother.

    Hi Stephen,

Thoroughly agree with you about art. I believe that the world is so much about appearances and almost bluff. I so wish that people who really produce art from the heart had a free access to being acknowledged. So many people in all aspects of life seem to be pedestalled because they follow the society rules rather than their own heart felt passions. The world truly needs heart not robots.

    Best Wishes Tony.

    Tony,

Good to hear from you, I have visited a couple of art museums, and it inspires me when I look at art work that displays so much talent, it make me want to work harder at being a more skilled artist, then i walk into another room , and a see a piece of styrofoam painted pink with pipe cleaners sticking out of it, or a canvas painted black, and a piece of torn up yellow paper glued to it, then give a title like, ” Light In The Dark ” and in some way these are great pieces of art, and my work isn’t as good as theirs if not better. then when you want to donate a piece of art to the museum, they claim they done have any room to except new work.

    Estelle,

When you saw my article, ” Shit happens”, I wrote cow patty, I change it to cow pie, in the U.S.A. this is the nick name for cow shit. The main concept is that art promoters are feeding us shitty art work,
I tried to communicate that it has nothing to do with a style of art, or a medium, I try to convey this by having each cow pie painted in a design, that represents the different styles of art, and the clear glass cups holding art utensils, represent the different mediums .

If you have any question, or comment, I would love to discuss this more.

    Hi Stephen,

Once again agree so much with you. When people create from the heart it is so inspiring to view. Like you I love seeing pure creative work and it makes me so pumped to be the best I can be. I have often bemoaned how the art scene works. It should be the most inspiring industry but often falls flat due to the things you describe. I commend you for taking a stance.

    Best Wishes Tony.

Ahh yes..I totally agree with you Stephen. I have had the same experience many times… been into art galleries and seen some great work and also soe work that is just infantile at best. I was at a museum recently in a capital city and saw a large work done by a (now deceased) famous Australian artists, who was a herion addict, and I thought his painting looked just like the demonic ramblings of a tortured brain….but I could not see that it was good art! (For all the huge money the gallery pays for works). I was at another show last week and the painting which won a major prize was about the level of my 3 year old grandson’s work….. I always thought it was just because I don’t understand enough about art! To me….art doesn’t have to be beautiful, but it does have to touch our soul somewhere. Skill and style are important. Thanks for bringing this subject up…I am studying art and like to listen to other people’s experience of it.
    warm wishes
