As I said on my “Polar Love” image, this was the best day of our Arctic trip. We were so lucky to spend hours with this mum and cubs as they moved around the ice flows. These cubs were around seven months old and full of joy – although they did not seem all that keen to follow mum this time!

The sea ice is shrinking at an alarming rate, which has a huge impact for the bears as this is their main hunting ground. More and more bears are being found to have drowned while trying to find the ice, even though they can swim up to sixty miles or so!

I hope the ice does not completely vanish and that they always have somewhere to hut!

Well… they probably were not keen to follow mom this time becasue the weather is changing so much up north… (I know becasue I lived there a while, and I could very well see the dramatic change in the weather patern…)
It seems to be geting much harder for polar bears to get to live life their ways..

This is a great picture… I love how you caught the movement, as well as how these cubs already look hesitant to cross that gap…

Steve. This is a fantastic image that I wonder how I missed it before. :-) It is a classic behavioral image that gives ton’s of info on the bears in a glance. How the cubs follow the mom, how obstacles can be crossed, etc. The timing and comp on this image is superb. A favorite for me w/o a doubt.
