Ayers Rock is the popular English designation (named after Sir Henry Ayers, a 19th century Australian governor). However, the rock’s official appellation is Uluru, the one given by the Anunga Aborigines.

No matter where we are on this island the rock is in our back yard
and like our love of our childhood kept in special reverence in our hearts
[even if we haven’t actually been there yet – like me!]
It is the heart of our land and the heart of our nationality
