Pilgrimage
mixed media production on paper, ink, pastel, charcoal and acrylic
Pilgrimage is about our passage through life, the boat represents the vehicle by which she travels, the wise animal represents the voice of wisdom, the bare tree represents a brand new slate on which to write each day, the crown speaks of how special each individual is. Pearls represent the tears of the moon and remind us that life may not be easy and we all struggle. The lotus represents strength through love. The daisies are for simplicity. The bindi is for spiritual insight. The red sky at night is a sailor’s delight…for a red sky at night indicates smooth seas on the morrow! As a fisherman’s daughter, I have witnessed the strange phenomena of a red sky numerous times….always turns out to be calm on the water next day – a great indicator.. red skies are a great indicator of smooth sailing ahead

Janis Zroback, 3 months ago
I LOVE IT…Where is she off to in all her make-up and Tiara? so nonchalantly relaxing in the boat which just fits her and the pussycat…YOU ARE INCREDIBLE KARIN…love the contrast of the casual look of her pose and yet she is dressed to the nines…I would think she is oriental from her hair and her large eyes and the dot on her forehead..ingenious to use the dark reds and blues, as it conveys a feeling of exoticism..
I am thinking of a Story…..
Janis Zroback, 3 months ago
P.S. I know you have your own message for the painting, but I have jumped in an entirely different direction, which is a story about who she is and where she is going…
Arletta, 3 months ago
very interesting .. the colors are jewel like and beautiful, the shapes are all cuteness Together it makes for a rather solid ethereality

in reply to georgiegirl’s comment,

hehe…umm well i think you could just about put it anywhere georgiegirl, it always makes me feel grounded for some reason, i have the original mounted in a white matt, in a white box frame, with a stunning dark blue wall behind it….it’s the nicest thing in my home by far…it hangs above an old timber cupboard, where i have similar coloured trinkets such as my kokeshi doll and little folk art painted drawers, a a beautiful palm husk timber lamp from Indonesia…..a lovely japanese print from my sister, and a beautiful chinese paper cut from an old friend ….... it’s such a nice warm collection, and I would find it so hard to let go of the original, but can always replace with a red bubble print i guess :D xoxo
Ellen, 3 months ago
Beautiful design again Karin, I like the colors a lot!
georgiegirl, 3 months ago
oooooh… sounds like a wonderfully warm (warm in feeling) comfy room!!! There’s no reason why you have to sell the original, just encourage the buyers to have a brand spanking new bubble print!! It sounds like your original is right at home where it is, especially if it makes you feel grounded. Did you paint the drawers yourself? I haven’t done folk art for years…
Karin Taylor
in reply to georgiegirl’s comment,

aw nah…my mum n dad gave em to me…they are tiny little ceramic square drawers x 4 in a timber frame…so sweet….i love little things like this…yes, you’re right i might just always keep that original…there is something about this that feels so sentimental :D xoxoxo

Ah you are another person who uses symbolism a lot in your work Mui-Ling….
yes, there is a calmness about a red sky,
i love it when the sky is a light blue below and a dark blue above (like twilight) and the stars are twinkling with the moon out…that’s my favourite sky of all…and all clear with no clouds :D

well, they are looking out on the whole wide world jakkio as they embark on their maiden voyage, the girl has just made the realisation that life is a journey, and she is now an active participant in the journey, with her she takes very little, and yet, everything one really needs, wisdom, a fresh start, a new attitude, a calm day heralded by a red sky….there she sits as she launches her little dinghy…looking out upon everyone else in the world…she is saying I’m on my way now peoples…i’ve realised My Journey Begins Here…and from hereon i will acknowledge everything as significant and look for ways to improve myself and my view on life. I will seek actively to grow and to learn from life’s lessons through the journey i know embark upon… :D hugs xoxo

yes, yes, a favourite old story of mine that one… yes…it’s typically about myself and my own journey and really, it encompasses everyone….the moment we realise life is taking us somewhere, that we are ever on a journey…..this is the moment of realisation about that, and her embarking on the journey, knowingly and acknowledging that through her preparedness…..by donning the crown, the bindi, taking on board wisdom, etc….she has taken the symbolic things that will get her through….everything here is imbued with meaning, which is in the description… i guess it’s a lot about self-realisation :D
thank yo so much for your lovely comments :D

Congrats…This does rock out to greet the optics.
However it has created a zoological problem which deserves explanation.
Udonchow reckons it is a squirrel
Others claim it to be a cat.
You simply describe it as being a “wise animal”.
I have it on good authority as being a genuine fallen angel in disguise, bumming a free ride to Paradise.
happysweetmama, 3 months ago
Wonderful style.
Karin Taylor

okay, okay…...I can see you are a genuine fallen angel, you have likely been sent from God to regain your heavenly status and work your way back to owning your own set of wings….your quest, to keep me honest iAN, i can see that….and also to stretch my brain and make me think up logical explanations :D ...
my cat/squirrel is a hybrid (don’t ask how) which yes indeed is a ‘wise animal’...if we were to give it a special name, for identification purposes, i think we should name it one of the following:
1. a savvy squat
2. a clever cuirrel
