LOOKING DOWN ON HISTORY by SMOKEYDOGSOCKS
IN 1982, WHEN I DROVE SEMI EXPRESS TEAM ACROSS COUNTRY, I MANAGED TO GET INTO THE HOUSTON TEXAS AREA SEVERAL TIMES IN ONE YEAR. SINCE I WAS BORN IN PASADENA, JUST ACROSS THE RIVER FROM HOUSTON, I CONSIDER IT MY HOME AREA, ALTHOUGH I NOW LIVE IN CALIFORNIA. ANYWAY, WHILE ENDURING A LAYOVER FOR TWO WEEKS, I CALLED MY GRANDFATHER THERE AND BORROWED HIS CAR TO GO SITE SEEING. I TOOK MY CO-DRIVER AND WE ENDED UP AT THE SAN JACINTO MONUMENT AND BATTLE SHIP MEMORIAL FOR THE USS TEXAS. WHEN I GOT TO THE TOP OF THE MONUMENT AND LOOKED OUT THE VIEWING PORT, I FELT LIKE I WAS “LOOKING DOWN ON HISTORY”. NOT PUTTING DOWN HISTORY, BUT LOOKING DOWN. I WAS A LONG WAYS UP IN THE AIR AT THE TOP OF THE MONUMENT. THE CONCRETE BOARDER AROUND THE REFLECTION POND IS SINKING FARTHER AND FARTHER INTO THE SOIL EACH YEAR. I UNDERSTAND THAT SINCE 1982 WHEN THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN, IT HAS SANK EVEN FARTHER DOWN AND THE POND HAS SPREAD OUT OF IT’S BANKS EVEN MORE.
