  • Lady with paper by david malcolmson

Gran loved to have flutter on the horses, and here she is studying the racing pages. I don’t know how she managed to read them as she had cataracts at the time. Sheer will-power, I suppose. One of the very first shots I took with a pre-war Leica IIIb which I had saved up for from my pocket-money. Was 19 years old at time. I lke the Rembrandtesque lighting – natural light from the window. This would be 1960.

  • Part Of The Old Dairy Barn by EmeraldSun

This is the only part of a HUGE dairy barn that’s left next door to my neighbor’s home. We used to PLAY in that HUGE barn which had 3 stories. Man, it was one of the biggest barns here in Ohio that I have ever seen. Now everything has come down for houses except this one little part that was salvaged as a shed for the new farm house owner. The house is made out of huge field stones-REAL ones-three stories high, with an old shale roof. NO air conditioning in this house to this very day-they don’t need it. This tad of the barn that’s left is in poor run down condition- But, still proudly stands as a reminder of it’s former self. Ahhhh, what wonderful memories. I can still hear the sounds of children laughing while playing—in the big barn…. just echoes.

  • St. Urho’s Juhla by AuntieJ

Location: St. Urho’s Dance; Little Finland, Hurley WI Film: Kodak black and white sepia; I don’t remember the specific name of the film. If anyone knows, please let me know. Cropped top for panoramic orientation. This photo was taken 10 years ago when I brought a couple of Finnish folk music researchers to my home town for St. Urho’s Day. The local Finnish organization was holding a dance and this was the little band that was playing. There was a good crowd that polka’ed, walzed and jenkka’ed the night away. St. Urho’s Day was invented by a northern Minnesotan who wanted a holiday for the Finns like the Irish have with St. Patrick and the Italians have with St. Joseph. The idea caught on and many Finnish Americans observe St. Urho’s Day on March 16 by wearing purple (for grapes) and green (for grasshoppers).
