Bamboo Characters - Chinese Gardens - Sydney by Jeff Catford
I guess this is really pretty low rent vandalism but it did look more pleasing to my occidental eye than the usual gormless graffiti scratchings on on some of the other nearby bamboo …. am I becoming a grumpy old man? ... :-) Buggered if I know what it means though. I hope it’s not too rude…. nah… I hope it is… :-) Nikon D200 – 18-135mm zoom – f5.6 @ 1/100 (-3EV) – ISO 1600

On a friend’s recommendation I just stole and sat through 1/4 of What the Bleep do We know? I stopped watching when I felt the same indignant revulsion I usually do when I come up against “anything is possible with a positive mental attitude” arguments. Perhaps, it is because being diagnosed with a mood disorder, I know fine well that ‘think yourself better’ is a pile of crap in terms of neurochemistry. At least a sizeable portion of the population have limited control over the colour of their thoughts. But what makes me most disgusted with the ‘anything is possible if you wish it to happen’ snake oil is that if you think for more than 30 thirty seconds about it, and apply the normal critical concept of ‘trying to break it’, you rapidly uncover that not only are you saying ‘Hey, you can make everything great if you just think good thoughts’, but you are also saying ‘6 Million Jews were killed because they thought the wrong thoughts’ or ‘People get AIDS because they have a poor outlook on life’ or ‘scores of children essentially are responsible for their own rape-murders’ and the list of absurdity goes on… You would have to be a special kind of crazy to hold those examples to be true, and I would extend that to stating you have to be a special kind of crazy to think that the wishes of one person can alone determine the where the entire universe is going. And this film (mockumentary) takes this egocentric responsibility shirking denial pyramid scheme to a new level. Capitalising on some of the concepts of Conspiraloon favourite Hollywood movie the Matrix, WTBDWK flat out fabricates scientific support for the idea that the universe is wholly immaterial and that is made from thought alone. Which to even my lamentable quantum physics skills is obviously confusing the lay understanding of ‘immaterial’ and the the Physics understanding. The obvious flaw in this kind of thinking is that one person cannot determine how the universe is going to be for everyone else- the universe is an interdependent flux of events. The vilest thing about this kind of thinking is that it transfers blame away from the perpetrator to the victim/sufferer. Here is some negative critical reaction from people more learned than myself: here / here / here
