Thought and Memory by Joe Christian
paper collage 21 3/8” x 27 7/8” Winter 2008 I have always been interested in medieval elements and it’s a little surprising that I waited so long to make a sword and sorcery piece. I started with the helmet and decided that a Viking theme would be fun and a partial tribute to Minnesota football. I had wanted to do a collage with ravens in it for some time and I had already fabricated a couple but couldn’t find an appropriate context. Then I remembered my Norse mythology. Odin, the Norse Allfather, is usually depicted as being accompanied by a pair of ravens called, “Huginn” and, “Muninn”, meaning “thought and memory”. According to Viking myth they travel great distances and upon returning Odin knows all they have seen and heard. For the background I decided that cool tones would be soothing to the viewer’s eye after being drawn initially to the bright metal colors. The snow and ice proved to be a natural setting for the ice palace entrance (I had been meaning to make a collage incorporating an ice palace for some time as well), and perhaps another reference to Minnesota and our winter carnival. Although usually Odin is depicted with a spear at hand I chose to represent him further with his crown, sword and shield. The dazzling gems in the shield I thought would match well with glittering stars and bright galaxies and are a reference to his deep knowledge. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-——- The materials used in this work were derived from various magazines, perhaps including, but not exclusive to; National Geographic, National Geographic Travel, Architectural Digest, Outside, Smithsonian, In Style, Playboy, Transworld, Reader’s Digest, Sailing, Sports Illustrated, Field & Stream, Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Skateboarder, American Rifleman, and American Hunter. I have altered, rearranged, and used the fragments of photographs and advertisements published in these magazines in a way inconsistent with their original context so that my derivative works do not infringe on any copyright. However, on the off chance that anyone recognizes any photograph fragments I have used in my work let me know so i can credit it properly. Thanks.

And I would like to thank Falln-Stock for the kind permission for the use of the image of the male model in the picture.. Thank you for looking…

This is a painting done in air brush from a pose. A body was used as ref, the look, hair, clothing, background, words, cans and other props ( looked a t live guitar for the ref) are all made up out of my head. This painting took forever! It’s Mitch in his stage clothing at the Dive “Smokey’s” before he blew it up along with Smokey. The painting on the wall is of the Angel of Death and the words state “you are a dead Man” in Italian. / / Villains and Villainesses: the darker side / Hombres Fatal (below is a seen told by Mitch when he was introduced into his life of crime) New York, the Bronx, the place is filled with dives over here. Yo I started off palayin’ the streets then I get an invite from a Fat bastard named Smokey to come play his joint. He digs that I draw in the crowds, females that is. You see, every sense I’ve been up in there, aint been nothin’ but the dames! LOL Na, it aint that full, The place is a dump! Smokey, he’s always lookin’ for ways NOT to do things, Sept one thing, Not pissin’ me off, He should of paid more attention to that than anything round here. So he’s tring to get invoved with the Itlians, thinki’ Me speaking Italian and looking like I am, I’m gona be his ticket in. He get’s with this small timer, dealin’ drugs, tells me I’m the new “dirty boy” that’s the guy who delivers but don’t piss ‘em off cause I’m one of them. I do the job. Smokey says “don’t you be late..bla bla” Yo, I tried! I did, but you know the streets, I get jumped right, so I have to kick they ass first, then I get the goods to where they need to be and BOOM I’m late over here, Smokey, he sees me next. start running his fat mouth. He change the locks on my appartment he rents me upstairs, BUST UP My guitar! MY bread and butter over here! See now that’s when he pissed me off! Talkin’ mess about how I messed up his connections.
