Mann Lake Sunrise II, Harney County, Oregon by Wesley Picotte
In the deep southeastern confines of Oregon is Mann Lake, pooled at the foot of Steens Mountain, a 30-mile long fault block piece of basalt. On its eastern side, seen here, Steens vaults nearly 2,000 feet into the sky in a nearly vertical relief. This is the desert and permanent lakes like Mann Lake are very rare indeed. It purportedly holds Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, the object of my visit. This population is a remnant of one that thrived in a vast inland sea covering this area during the Cretaceous Period. This species of trout survives here, where others cannot, because it can withstand saline water. I circumnavigated Steens Mountain over the course of a week and camped at Mann Lake for three days. I saw no trout, but did find an arrowhead and this sunrise.
